Wilmot Cancer Center: Advancing the Science of Cancer Care

The James P. Wilmot Cancer Center has a team of about 400 doctors, nurses, scientists and support staff dedicated to advancing cancer care through research. The Gastrointestinal Oncology Team, the largest in the region with some 40 physicians, scientists, nurses and support staff, cares for people with pancreatic, stomach, biliary Wilmot Cancer Centertract, liver, colorectal and anal cancers. In 2010, an estimated 43,140 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States. 36,800 of them will die. There are no screening methods or warning signs until the disease has advanced and spread. Sadly, the survival rate is low and there has been little change in the survival rate in the last 40 years! Dr. Aram Hezel and Wilmot Cancer Center’s robust clinical trials program works to gain access to new therapies in development for clinical studies, providing local people with pancreatic cancer access to tomorrow’s therapies today. For example, oncologists are leading a national clinical study of a new medication that targets a specific molecule found in pancreatic cancer cells to help destroy them. And, scientists are working in the lab to Dr. Hezel pictureidentify the genes that contribute to pancreatic cancer development. Better understanding the mechanisms behind the genesis of the disease will help scientists and clinicians develop strategies to combat the disease, and someday prevent it. The Wilmot Cancer Center is committed to its promise: the cure starts here.
